On May 16鈥攖he same day her classmates will be participating in the 2026 Commencement ceremony鈥擥arcia will be taking the entry and physical training test for the police department in Waxahachie, Texas, officially launching her pursuit of a career in law enforcement. It鈥檚 a decision that means missing one of life鈥檚 most anticipated milestones. But for Garcia, it鈥檚 also the clearest sign yet that she鈥檚 exactly where she鈥檚 meant to be.
鈥淭he decision was difficult all around,鈥� said Garcia, a psychology major from Ferris, Texas. 鈥淜nowing that I would miss out on those memories with my friends and family was hard. But my people know how important this career is to me. I knew no matter what I decided, they were going to support me.鈥�
That clarity of purpose didn鈥檛 happen overnight. It鈥檚 something that has been steadily shaped鈥攂oth by her lifelong passion and by the opportunities she embraced at Ozarks.
Garcia鈥檚 interest in law enforcement began long before college. As a child, she watched officers closely, drawn to their presence and purpose. That admiration turned into action during high school, when a law enforcement class鈥攁nd a teacher who served in the field鈥攊gnited something deeper.
鈥淢y passion just grew as the years went on,鈥� she said. 鈥淚 have always loved helping others and making a positive impact on my community.鈥�
At Ozarks, that passion found direction. Through her academic experience, leadership roles, and as a basketball player for the Eagles, Garcia developed the qualities she believes are essential to the profession: integrity, accountability, discipline, and resilience.
鈥淭his job requires a lot of mental and physical discipline,鈥� she said. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 something I鈥檝e experienced through my basketball career.鈥�
Garcia鈥檚 impact on campus extended far beyond athletics. As a four-year student ambassador鈥攁nd eventually president of the program鈥攕he became one of the University鈥檚 most visible and influential student leaders.
鈥淚 have loved every second of being a student ambassador,鈥� she said. 鈥淚t has opened many doors for me and created many lifelong relationships.鈥�
What brought her the most joy wasn鈥檛 the title, but the moments that followed.
鈥淭he biggest part that brings me joy is when I see students I gave a tour to on campus the next semester鈥攕miling, wearing their backpack, and remembering our first interaction,鈥� she said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 even more special when it鈥檚 a future teammate. I got to be a part of their transition here.鈥�
Those experiences didn鈥檛 just build confidence鈥攖hey reinforced her calling to serve others.
On the court, Garcia built a career defined by grit and unforgettable moments. One stands above the rest: a thrilling playoff victory at UT Dallas in the conference postseason tournament during her sophomore year.
鈥淭hat moment was unreal,鈥� she said. 鈥淭he excitement was through the roof. We made history that year, and it will forever hold a special place in my heart.鈥�
Even when an injury cut her senior season short, Garcia never lost perspective.
鈥淥verall, my college basketball career was a great ride,鈥� she said. 鈥淚 developed so many skills that I will continue to use in the future. Playing at the next level was a huge blessing.鈥�
Garcia鈥檚 story carries even deeper meaning as the first in her immediate family to graduate from college.
鈥淚t feels surreal, but such an amazing blessing,鈥� she said. 鈥淚 couldn鈥檛 have done it without my family’s support.鈥�
That鈥檚 what makes her decision to miss Commencement especially emotional.
鈥淚 was sad knowing my parents wouldn鈥檛 get to see their youngest child walk across that stage,鈥� she said. 鈥淏ut they鈥檝e listened to me for years talk about this career. They know how driven and passionate I am. Having their love and support means the world.鈥�
For Garcia, the choice to miss the graduation ceremony ultimately came down to faith, timing, and trust.
鈥淚 knew in my heart that God was opening this door for me sooner for a reason,鈥� she said. 鈥淚 always put my trust in Him.鈥�
It鈥檚 a decision that reflects both sacrifice and conviction鈥攁 willingness to trade a symbolic ending for a meaningful beginning.
Garcia described her time at the University as transformational鈥攏ot just for what she accomplished, but for who she became.
鈥淥zarks helped me truly find myself,鈥� she said. 鈥淚 have been extremely blessed to be a part of great programs on and off campus and I got to get out of my comfort zone and explore the world in a new lens. I got to meet wonderful people, my significant other included in that, and the memories shared here will always be extremely special to me. This University opened doors for me and gave me opportunities that I will be forever grateful for.鈥�
From leadership development to lifelong relationships, from athletic competition to personal growth, her experience shaped both her confidence and her calling.
鈥淭he moment I stepped foot on campus, I was welcomed with open arms,鈥� she said. 鈥淚t felt like home since day one.鈥�
While Garcia won鈥檛 walk across the graduation stage this spring, her journey is far from incomplete.
