Urban Forest Retoration Project

A group of ĚÇĐÄvlogąŮÍř faculty and staff have begun a Nature Preserve Urban Forest Restoration Project on the north end of campus that will provide numerous academic and recreation opportunities for the campus community.

The team leading up the project includes, Dr. Murat Atasoy, assistant professor of environmental studies; Dr. Darrin Hunt, assistant professor of biology; Dr. Christie Sampson, assistant professor of biology; and Darrell Shaw, director of Ozarks Outdoors.

The initial efforts in the nature preserve that sits north of the Wilson Athletic Complex has included the removal of understory shrub cover and some trees as well as mulching the soil to increase forest health and help natural regeneration of forest management.

Recently, the team invited District Forrester Jeff Frizzell from the Arkansas Department of Agriculture’s Forestry Division to talk to several classes about the importance of urban forest restoration (photo above).

Atasoy said the project will help enhance students’ knowledge of improving urban forest health and species diversity.

“This urban forest will provide students an opportunity to practice the forest inventory data management,” Atasoy said. “Our students will be also helping with eradication of invasive woody shrubs, removal of wood debris and building a sustainable trail which will be made of the tree logs harvested from the nature preserve. More importantly, they will learn to identify the Arkansas tree species and their management.”

Hunt said a pond located in the nature preserve will also play an academic role.

“The pond system provides an opportunity for students to investigate linkages between terrestrial and aquatic systems,” Hunt said. “The indirect effects of human activity, such as sedimentation and nutrient loading associated with urbanization and agriculture, may impact wildlife habitat, water chemistry, and productivity in the local watershed. Additionally, recent forest management activities on the preserve offer a unique opportunity to observe how urban forestry impacts aquatic pond systems.”

Sampson said the preserve will also help her and her students as they take part in a national phenology project () monitoring redbuds, an iconic native North American tree species.

“We are hoping to conduct paired studies on plant and wildlife management between the reserve and other University and public properties, as well as create an inventory as part of the coursework in the biology department,” Sampson said.

Shaw’s goals with the U of O Nature Preserve include more of a recreational slant.

“My dream for the nature preserve is to re-establish the trails that were there and build a very beginner-friendly mountain bike/hiking trail around the perimeter,” he said. “Some other ideas include adding a bridge, made from cedar, over to the pond; dig out the pond so that it doesn’t overflow as often, possibly making it a little bigger so that students could kayak and canoe; adding fish annually so that students can fish; adding a hammock and camping area with a fire ring; and, if there is room, possibly adding two holes for the disc golf course, which will increase the flows around the campus better.”

The forest restoration project is expected to be completed by spring 2026.

Fall 2024 Graduates

ĚÇĐÄvlogąŮÍř conferred bachelor degrees on 44 graduates on Saturday morning during the 2024 Fall Commencement ceremony.

Jerry Glidewell, a 1979 Ozarks graduate and retired CEO of the Fort Smith (Ark.) Boys & Girls Clubs, was the keynote speaker at the ceremony.

Glidewell told the graduates to be flexible and to embrace the journey.

“Your thoughts, values and goals will change over time; don’t let success inflate your ego and don’t let failure diminish your worth,” he said. “In other words — Don’t get above your highs, and don’t get below your lows. Sometimes progress is not always a straight line and you might have to take a few steps sideways before being able to move forward … And, embrace the journey — breathe it in.  Keep the big picture in focus, but always be aware of the little things that make life special.”

Claudia Garcia, an elementary education major from Clarksville, provided the senior address.

“I am thankful for the opportunities this school has afforded me and feel well-equipped to shape young minds into future upstanding citizens,” Garcia said. “I know as the years go by, I will look back on my time here and cherish my service as an ambassador, my opportunity to study abroad in Northern Ireland, the soccer games I played in, and most importantly, the relationships that have been built with students, faculty, and staff.”

Here is a to the livestream recording of the ceremony.

Partnership with UAFS

ĚÇĐÄvlogąŮÍř has joined into a new academic partnership with the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith’s Carolyn McKelvey Moore School of Nursing for students interested in careers in nursing.

Under the 2+2 articulation agreement, students complete the first two years of study at U of O and transfer all credit hours to UAFS for completion of the Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN). The pre-nursing track at Ozarks will be implemented beginning the Fall 2025 Semester.

The agreement was signed recently by U of O President Richard Dunsworth and UAFS Chancellor Dr. Terisa Riley.

Dunsworth cited the projected shortage in nursing in Arkansas and the region as the catalyst behind adding the pre-nursing track at Ozarks. According to the Health Resources and Service Administration (HRSA), over the next decade it is projected that Arkansas will be short more than 3,500 registered nurses.  Oklahoma is projected to be short nearly 7,000 and Texas another 32,000.

“It is imperative that educational institutions positioned to fill this void come together and create opportunities,” Dunsworth said. “The 2+2 agreement between ĚÇĐÄvlogąŮÍř and University of Arkansas – Fort Smith will allow students another opportunity to fill this important need. It is our hope that these students will choose to stay and serve the River Valley and we are excited to partner with UAFS in this exciting new venture.”

The newly-articulated academic pathway is the product of the historically strong partnership between the two universities, according to Dr. D. Antonio CantĂą, dean of the College of Health, Education, and Human Sciences at UAFS.

“This agreement is the result of the collaborative efforts of the respective leadership teams at the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith and ĚÇĐÄvlogąŮÍř,” said CantĂą. “The agreement will serve to build upon this partnership by not only establishing for students an efficacious academic pathway to the BSN program, but also by providing them with, upon degree completion, a professional portal to a career in nursing, further increasing the pipeline of healthcare professionals in the River Valley Region and across the state. In the end, the agreement helps qualified pre-nursing students at ĚÇĐÄvlogąŮÍř advance to the next phase in their academic journey as nursing students in the BSN program at the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith, bringing them one step closer to realizing their dream of entering the nursing profession.”

Dr. Paula Julian, associate dean of the UAFS College of Health, Education, and Human Sciences and executive director of the Carolyn McKelvey Moore School of Nursing, said the articulation agreement “creates a seamless pathway for students, providing them with a clear, structured route to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree.”

“This collaboration enhances the educational experience by combining the strengths of both institutions, ensuring that students receive a comprehensive, high-quality education and are well-prepared to meet the growing demand for practice-ready nurses,” Julian said.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) forecasts a nine percent growth in nursing employment from 2020 to 2030, accounting for an estimated increase of 276,800 jobs in the field. The BLS suggests that about one in every eleven new jobs created will be in nursing.

Those interested in more information about the U of O pre-nursing program are encouraged to contact admission@ozarks.edu

A wedding, two Ph.D.s and a move to Montreal are all on the agenda over the next nine months for ĚÇĐÄvlogąŮÍř alums Ralph “JP” Jean-Pierre and GaĂ«tane Ternier.

Jean-Pierre and Ternier, both 2020 Ozarks graduates from Haiti, were married in Northwest Arkansas on Dec. 7, and that’s just the start of a busy next few months for the couple.

Jean-Pierre is expected to complete his Ph.D. in agricultural economics from Oklahoma State University in May 2025. Ternier is expected to complete her Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of Arkansas in August 2025. The couple will move to Montreal following their wedding where Jean-Pierre has an academic research position secured at the Université de Montréal.

“There’s certainly a lot going on for us right now, but we wouldn’t want it any other way,” Jean-Pierre said. “It’s an exciting time.”

Jean-Pierre earned a major in business administration with minors in sustainable agriculture, creative writing & thought and economics from Ozarks. He said he decided to pursue a Ph.D. in agricultural economics because of an incident that had a major impact on him and his family while growing up in Haiti.

His family members were agricultural producers in Saint-Louis du Sud, a rural town in the southern department of Haiti. They raised livestock, including swine. In the early 1980s, an outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF) in Haiti forced many rural families, including his own, to leave their livelihoods behind.

“Following the ASF outbreak, the government implemented a nationwide swine depopulation campaign to limit the disease’s spread and many farmers received no compensation for their losses,” Jean-Pierre said. “This campaign led to disruptions, a large-scale rural exodus, and increased emigration to neighboring countries. This experience ignited my interest in understanding the economic impacts of animal diseases and inspired me to pursue a career dedicated to identifying solutions that protect communities from similar challenges.”

Jean-Pierre said his career goals are “to contribute to impactful research in animal health economics, with a focus on education, innovation, and cost-effective solutions for disease management, particularly in rural areas and developing countries where this intersection of livestock health and economic stability is often the most consequential to both producer and consumer well-being.”

Since his time at OSU, Jean-Pierre has been awarded the International Livestock Research Institute Ph.D. Research Fellow (2023-2024), the Williams Distinguished Graduate Fellow (2023), the Stoecker Family International Agricultural Economics Fellow (2023) and the Leonard F. Miller Distinguished Graduate Fellow in International Rural Development (2021-2022). The title of his Ph.D. dissertation is “Foot-and-Mouth Disease Management and Consequences on Rwanda’s Cattle Sector: A Multi-Model Approach Integrating Livestock Dynamics, Epidemiology and Economics Analysis.”

At the Université de Montréal, he will join the Plateforme AI-Agrosanté (PIAAS) where his research focus will be on “Economic and Health Implications of Artificial Intelligence in Livestock Disease Management and Incentives for Farmer Adoption.”

“The main goals of this research will be to understand the potential opportunity losses associated with on-farm AI non-adoption to prevent or control a potential disease spread; analyze the costs, benefits, and market impacts of AI adoption; and disseminate research findings through workshops and trainings to reduce the gap between scientific research and practical implementation within Quebec’s agri-food sector,” he said.

Jean-Pierre said the LENS curriculum at Ozarks helped guide him on his career course.

“Ozarks encouraged me to explore my strengths outside of my comfort zone, and the LENS program played an important role in shaping my career as an agricultural economist,” he said. “When I arrived at Ozarks, I was set on majoring in business administration, with an economics concentration, but the LENS program required me to select a minor in the natural sciences. On the advice of my advisor, Christine McCain, I chose sustainable agriculture. This decision helped me discover my passion for applying economic principles to the agricultural sector.”

Ternier, who earned majors in chemistry and biology at Ozarks, said her research centers around the metabolic and structural characterization of fibroblast growth factor (FGF) proteins. Her Ph.D. dissertation is titled, “Characterization of the Structure and Function of Recombinant FGF19.”

“My interest in biochemistry is sourced from the importance that plant-based remedies have in the Haitian society as compared to conventional methods,” she said. “I became particularly intrigued by how plants, often considered poisonous, can also serve as effective treatments for diseases. I first wanted a career in pharmacy, but my journey shifted upon attending my first college biochemistry class. My first week in this class was the moment I realized my desire for knowledge extended far beyond drug interactions; I wanted to understand the molecular mechanisms orchestrating our physiological responses.”

Ternier said her career goal is to make a “meaningful contribution to patient health within a clinical or pharmaceutical setting. I want to collaborate with medical professionals and conduct research that has a direct, positive impact on both patient care and clinical practices.”

She credited her Ozarks education for sparking her interest in research.

“Ozarks culture as a smaller community facilitates students and faculty interactions, which benefited my decision-making in terms of graduate program selections and preparations for success,” Ternier said. “Graduating from Ozarks with a double major in biology and chemistry gave me a diverse perspective. My background in biology gave me a better understanding of cellular processes and physiological systems, which is essential for my research on FGF19.”

Jean-Pierre and Ternier have known each other since their high school years in Haiti and began dating shortly before enrolling at Ozarks. They were married on Dec. 7 at Saint Vincent De Paul Catholic Church in Rogers, Ark., before embarking on a honeymoon to the Florida keys.

The ĚÇĐÄvlogąŮÍř’ Board of Trustees recently approved the creation of a graphic design major during its fall meeting in October.

The graphic design major will be implemented beginning the Fall 2025 Semester and will be a part of the University’s art program.

In addition to the new graphic design major, faculty have approved a new minor in photography and are working on an interdisciplinary minor in design to complement the University’s LENS curriculum. Both minors are expected to be added for the Fall 2025 Semester and will also be a part of the art department.

Dr. Janie Diels, vice president for academic affairs, said the new graphic design major “builds on the strengths of our art program.”

“The major will prepare students for careers in the graphic design industry and will cultivate knowledge of design principles along with a mastery of design software,” Diels said. “True to the Ozarks traditions, students will find small class sizes that provide a challenging yet supportive atmosphere, and a strong sense of community, and a new design studio that will ensure our graduates are learning to use state-of-the-art tools of the trade.”

Diels said a search for a tenure-track faculty member specializing in graphic design will be launched within the next few weeks.

Windgate Professor of Art Tammy Harrington said the graphic design major will provide another career track for art students and that courses will range from typography to web design to product/package design.

“Currently, we only offer one graphic design course and this will be expanded to include five or more graphic design focused courses,” Harrington said. “The Walton Fine Arts Center computer lab has been updated with Mac computers and students will learn a broader range of Adobe Creative Suite software in order to be competitive in the workforce.”

Harrington said the design minor will offer coursework that would be an enhancement to many careers.

“It will provide knowledge and skills useful in self-promotion, social media posting, and communication in a way that is visually interesting and shares information in a clear and creative manner,” she said.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 3.3 percent employment growth for graphic designers between 2022 and 2032. In that period, an estimated 9,000 jobs are expected to open up in the field.

Krista Denne, instruction and outreach librarian at ĚÇĐÄvlogąŮÍř, will share her expertise on Artificial Intelligence (AI) at several campus and state-wide events within the next few weeks.

Denne will organize and facilitate AI Week on the U of O campus this week. Presented by Robson Library, AI Week will feature a different speaker and AI-related topic throughout the week, beginning with Dr. Bill Gorton, assistant professor of political science and philosophy, discussing “Ethics and AI” at 6 p.m. today in Robson Library.

Other speakers and topics for AI Week will include, Matt Bewley, director of career services, with “AI Powered Job Search and Resume Enhancement” on Tuesday; Tina McCain, academic support coordinator, with “AI in the Workplace” on Wednesday; and Denne with “AI and Academic Research” on Thursday. The events begin at 6 p.m. each evening in Robson Library and the public is invited to attend.

In addition, Denne will be a member of the panel discussion at the Arkansas Library Association Conference on AI in Academics on Oct. 5 in Hot Springs. The event will feature Arkansas librarians from diverse academic institutions discussing how generative AI has influenced their institutions. They will share insights on its practical applications, impact on their work, and policies for ethical use.

On Oct. 7, Denne will give a presentation on AI in Academic Research to the TRIO Arkansas Association of Student Assistance Programs in Hot Springs.

In describing her presentation to TRIO, Denne said: “AI can be a distraction, problem, or headache for many in the academic world. It can also be a tool we teach our students to use so they are prepared to use it effectively, ethically, and with caution while in college and the professional world. I seek to find that balance while equipping students to see it as a tool, not a solution. This presentation will highlight the ethical and efficient uses of generative AI and highlight the importance of AI research tools such as Research Rabbit, Elicit, and others.”

This past summer, Denne was certified in efficient prompt engineering from the Association of College and Research Libraries and completed her library coursework with a class on AI in libraries. Last spring she presented to more than 100 U of O faculty and students in Robson Library on AI in Academic Research.
